Los Angeles, California, United States · Seasonal

Description

Organization: SMASH

Program: SMASH Saturday Academy

Title: Computer Science 1 + 2 Workshop Facilitator

Location: UCLA (Los Angeles)

Reports to: SMASH Site Director

Position Type: Consultant, temporary

Please note that this position is for SMASH Saturday Academy, a workshop series that takes place during the Fall and Spring terms of the academic year, not for the SMASH Summer Academy.

About SMASH Summer Academy:

The Level Playing Field Institute is now SMASH! SMASH is an organization committed to eliminating the barriers faced by underrepresented people of color in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and fostering their untapped talent for the advancement of our nation.

SMASH Summer Academy, referred to as “perhaps the most ambitious program to encourage African American and Latino students in STEM fields” by US News and World Report, is heading into its 16th summer this year.

Founded in 2001, SMASH is an Oakland-based nonprofit organization that operates SMASH Academy, a year-round STEM-focused academic program that serves underrepresented high school students. In tandem, SMASH conducts research examining inequity in access and opportunity across K-12, higher education, and workplace contexts in order to improve the outcomes for underrepresented students in STEM fields.

SMASH Summer Academy is a five-week, three-year Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) residential academic acceleration program for motivated, high school students from underrepresented populations (African-American, Latinx/Hispanic, Southeast Asian and/or Pacific Islander, and Native American), who have demonstrated an aptitude for science and math. During the summer component, SMASH provides accelerated classes, laboratory experiments and exposure to STEM fields; the academic rigor is alloyed with a strong community experience in residential dorms to introduce our scholars to a university environment.

SMASH Saturday Academy:

During the academic year, SMASH provides computer science courses, college counseling, community events and further exposure to STEM opportunities. The opportunities take place on Saturdays (dates vary by site).

About the Role:

The SMASH Computer Science Program is a project-based curriculum which also emphasizes design thinking. Universal themes throughout our CS sequence include problem solving, computer architecture, standard data structures and algorithms, UI / UX design, sociological issues, and the history and culture of computing. Additionally, scholars are introduced to languages and skills that are in high demand in today’s (and tomorrow’s) engineering industry.

The workshops will augment the SMASH Computer Science courses offered during the SMASH Summer Academy, which focus on data science concepts and software development using SQL, Python, Javascript. Workshop facilitators will need to be confident teaching CSS and Javascript.

Reporting to the SMASH Site Director at each campus, the Workshop Facilitator will play an integral role in delivering and sustaining the transformative educational experience that SMASH Scholars need to pursue, persist, and succeed in STEM. SMASH Computer Science Workshop Facilitators will facilitate full day Computer Science workshops for our 10th and 11th grade students.

This is a 2 workshop assignment (December 2019 and February 2020), with some preparation required before workshops begin and post workshop record keeping + submission of deliverables. Although the majority of the position will function as described below, some aspects are subject to change due to evolving program needs.

Working at SMASH Academy is about professional growth, personal commitment, and the tenacity to challenge the pedagogical status quo. SMASH Academy offers a unique environment for scholars and staff alike to focus on their interests in STEM education and explore cutting-edge practices. SMASH is seeking to hire individuals who will contribute to our larger aim of developing our scholars to be STEM practitioners who are civically aware and social justice oriented, equipped to employ their STEM knowledge and skills for the betterment of their local, national, and global communities.

This is not for the faint of heart. But if you think you have what it takes to dare to change the face of STEM, join us.
